Tarot and Oracle Decks
I love divination decks of all sorts and have been collecting since the 1990s. At the moment I own just over 800 decks. Here is a list of some of the decks I own and recommend for readers who have various tastes and needs. This page will be updated periodically. Please note, links are affiliate links to Amazon.
Traditional Tarot
Rider-Waite-Smith
The Rider Waite Smith deck by Arthur E. Waite and Pamela Coleman Smith is the “gold standard” for modern Tarot decks. Most Tarot teachers would recommend this deck if you are new to Tarot due to its universal symbolism.
David Palladini’s Aquarian Tarot was the second Tarot deck I owned. The first was a classic RWS. My beloved Aquarian Tarot is so well-worn that I purchased a replacement and retired the original. In fact, I love it so much that I got the mini-deck in a tin to take with me! My Aquarian Tarot collection can be seen below. If you like Art Deco, you'll love the Aquarian Tarot.
Morgan-Greer by Bill F. Greer and Lloyd Morgan is a classic deck in the RWS tradition. I first bought a Morgan-Greer in the 1990s. Since then I’ve gifted copies when the occasion arose. If you want a vibrant deck with bold lines, this Tarot should meet your needs. It even comes in a mini size (packaged in a tin).
The Connolly Tarot by Peter Paul Connolly and Eileen Connolly is another classic. Drawn and colored with pencil, this Tarot offers vivid hues to boost your intuition. This was one of the first decks I purchased many years ago, and I still enjoy working with it.
The Tarot Mucha by Massaylia Dosenzo is a sweet Art Nouveau-inspired Tarot. RWS symbolism is used throughout. This is truly a joy of a deck to work with.
Speaking of Art Nouveau, The Golden Art Nouveau is another favorite. I use it for clients regularly, some say it’s like a gossipy old aunt who knows everybody’s business. It gets extra points for gold foil on the standard-sized deck. This is another deck I purchased in “fun size.” The mini comes in a sturdy clamshell box.
Hanson-Roberts Tarot by Mary Hanson-Roberts is a smaller deck based on the RWS. If you have small hands and like colored pencil artwork, Hanson-Roberts could be a good choice for you.
Tarot of Mystical Moments by Catrin Welz-Stein is a quirky delight. I had used the Oracle of Mystical Moments for a few years before the Tarot was released, and of course had to grab the Taort up as soon as possible. If you like fantasy images, you may enjoy having your intuition tickled by either of these decks.
Thoth
The original Thoth deck is the Thoth Tarot Deck (Green) by Aleister Crowley, Lady Frieda Harris. I would strongly recommend adding The Book of Thoth (Egyptian Tarot) by Aleister Crowley as this is a completely different system from RWS.
Cosmic Tarot Deck by Norbert Losche is a modern take on the Thoth system, however, it’s been in print long enough to be a classic itself.
Another modern Thoth is the Sun And Moon Tarot Deck by Vanessa Decort. The illustrations are cute, but the messages are clear. This is another deck available as a mini-in-a-tin.
For a clone of the Thoth, you may consider the Millennium Thoth Tarot by Renata Lechner. This deck comes in a sturdy box.
Tarot de Marseille
Sefirot - The Spheres of Heaven Tarot by Georg Hobmeier and James Patton is the first modern Tarot de Marseilles deck I’ve owned in decades. Read the guidebook for interpretation.
CBD Tarot De Marseille by Dr. Yoav Ben-Dov is a recreation of a traditional TdM deck. Dr. Ben-Dov was an authority on TdM. The deck comes with a small instruction book that includes reversals, a very non-traditional practice for TdM.
The Grand Universal Tarot by Bruno de Nys includes a guidebook and is packaged in a larger box. If you are a TdM novice, I recommend The Grand Universal Tarot with its book.
Marseille Tarot Professional Edition by Anna Maria Morsucci and Mattio Ottolini is a larger card with sturdy cardstock. Lo Scarabeo intended this deck to stand up to frequent use.
Golden Tarot de Marseille by Lo Scarabeo is a reproduction of a 1751 TdM deck with added bling. Gold foil decorates this traditional deck as did the original.
If you’re looking for a smaller deck, Tarot de Maria Celia by Lynyrd-Jym Narciso is a watercolor delight packaged in a tin. I’ve used it as my “purse deck” a number of times.
For a not-so-traditional TdM, try Squid Cake Marseille Tarot by Jessica Rollar. This predominately pink Tarot puts a modern spin on a 15th-century divination tool.
Themed Decks
Herbal Decks
The Herbal Tarot by Michael Tierra and Candis Cantin is the earliest herbal-themed deck I know of. The author links the meanings and connotations of the cards to herbal uses and symbolism. I strongly recommend purchasing the guidebook, The Spirit of Herbs: A Guide to the Herbal Tarot as well.
The Herbcrafter's Tarot by Latisha Guthrie and Joanna Powell Colbert is probably my favorite herbal divination deck. This deck has strong feminine energies and connects to the magical practices related to plants. The guidebook (included) also contains information on using herbs in your spiritual practice.
The Herbal Astrology Oracle by Adriana Ayales and Josephine Klerks is a spot-on oracle deck that incorporates astrology and herbal symbolism. The culturally diverse images help me tap into the collective unconscious that flows through humanity.
The Seed & Sickle Oracle Deck by Fez Inkwright is like two decks in one. The Seed interpretations are for spiritual growth and predictive readings. The Sickle interpretations are the shadow side and are good for shadow work. It is also recommended to use the Seed for upright interpretation and the Sickle for reversals. However you want to use it, this is a stellar deck.
Witches' Kitchen Oracle by Barbara Meiklejohn-Free and Flavia Kate Peters is a witchy herbal oracle. This is another deck that incorporates the symbolism related to herbs and their magical uses. You may also be interested in the Witches’ Wisdom Oracle by the same creators, which is a mix of witchiness.
Green Witch Oracle Cards: Discover Real Secrets of Natural Magick by Cheralyn Darcey also combines the magical side of herbs and divination. This deck speaks to me very clearly without a lot of “fuss.”
Animal Decks
Witches’ Familiar Oracle by Meiklejohn-Free & Peters (mentioned above) takes the symbolism and energies of animal familiars for you to use in divination. This is one of three decks by these deck creators.
Animal Totem Tarot by Leeza Robertson and Eugene Smith is a delightful animal-only deck. I know that a number of readers prefer a deck with no human representations, sometimes to avoid cultural gaps or misrepresentations. The artwork on this deck speaks very well and the style is appealing.
The Spiritsong Tarot by Paulina Cassidy is a sweet animal Tarot illustrated with soft hues. It features keywords that may aid a novice reader in finding their balance during readings.
Prairie Majesty Oracle by Kara Simons and Amy Putney Koenig uses the animals of the North American plains. If you feel a connection to Native American roots, this may be a good fit for you.
Cat’s Eye Tarot by Debra M. Givin is a cute deck that shows Tarot symbolism through the lives of cats. This is one of many cat decks in my collection.
One of my latest cat decks is the Soul Cats Tarot by Leeza Robertson and Adam Oehlers. It quickly became a favorite for week-ahead readings as it is very to the point.
The Tarot of Curious Creatures by Chris-Anne is an incredibly wild deck…get it? Wild?...okay enough with the Dad Jokes. Human subjects posed with animal heads relay the messages of the cards.
Fairy Decks
Fairy Tarot Cards by Radleigh Valentine may have sweet illustrations but the card meanings (printed directly on the card) are easily related to the RWS meanings. I bought this and a few others by the same creator to use for “Tarotphobic” clients. The messages make it through without frightening the anxious.
Tarot of the Fairy Folk by Giacinto Gaudenzi is an RWS-style deck that brings the reader into the world of the fairy.
Fairy Wisdom Oracle Deck and Book Set by Amy & Nancy Brown comes packaged in a large sturdy box with an excellent guide. As with most oracles, you can read them intuitively, but the guidebook is a wealth of information.
A “Fairy Adjacent” RWS deck I’ve recently found is Tarot of the Enchanted Garden by Rossana Pala. Its artwork is otherworldly in a pastel hue. After receiving my copy, I learned the borders fit together perfectly.
In the same vein as the Tarot of the Enchanted Garden is Tarot of a Moon Garden by Karen Marie Sweikhardt. This is an older deck with a whimsical feel but the link goes to the new updated borderless version.
Angels
Angel Wisdom Tarot by Radleigh Valentine is another deck for the Tarotphobic. It appears to be a renewed version of the older Angel Tarot he created with a partner. Meanings are on the cards and reflect RWS interpretations.
Oracle of The Angels by Mario Duguay is a deck for introspection and growth. Ask your angels to guide you through and bring their messages for your path.
Archangel Oracle Cards by Diana Cooper and Jane Delaford Taylor give wisdom from the angels. Keywords on the cards are useful for interpretation.
Angel Tarot by Travis McHenry is an esoteric deck based on angel lore. Its inverse is the Occult Tarot, which provides insight through demonology.
