Gypsy Witch Fortune Telling Cards: Tutorial and Sample Reading Part 3
Welcome to the third installment of my series on the Gypsy Witch Fortune Telling Cards (GW). As I have explained in an earlier post, there are different methods for reading these cards. One is by pairing (like Lenormand) and another is interpreting each card individually but keeping in mind the proximal cues of the cards. This is also called the near-far method. Today’s blog post will be devoted to the near-far method.
The near-far method is largely considered the most legitimate or traditional method of reading the GW cards. The cards have stand-alone meanings but also rely on their proximity and position in relation to other cards. These proximal cues are generally printed directly on the cards, however some are not printed but have been used by numerous readers and can be considered as well. Below is an example of the card meaning shown on The Order. The verse references card 48 (The Money Safe): “near 48, a sure sign of business success.” Near can mean beside or separated by no more than one card. But there are some proximal connections that come naturally to this card, such as near the Ring, a business contract or partnership may be possible.

Latrice is hoping to romantically connect with Will, a coworker who caught her attention at an office get-together last month. She would like to know what is possible in this relationship. I used an alternative version of the GW, the Vintage Gypsy Witch Oracle, self-published by Lyn Boyle of Aquarius Well-Being and available on Etsy.
The layout is the Three by Three, available in my services, with The Lady as the center card to represent Latrice. The top row shows what from the past has a bearing on the current situation. It would seem the office gossips picked up on the attraction. The Flowers show friends or acquaintances. Since Flowers are beside the Coffin, these “friends” have lost respect for her. Followed by the Rapiers in the same row indicates they are working to harm her reputation or discredit her.
The present is shown in the middle row. The Mountain is an adversary…this card tells me that one of the “friends” mentioned above is in competition with Latrice for Will’s affections, but the Rider on The Lady’s right tells her that he’s more interested in Latrice. The Rider tells us good news or reveals success unless it is to the right or left of a negative card. It does fall to the lower right corner of one of the cards indicated, but it is not beside it. Additionally, the Rider is directly beside the Lady.
The possibilities are shown in the bottom row. The Order is the first card, and it is beside the Letter. This shows that Latrice’s professional standing will not be harmed by the gossip. The Order is business and the Letter brings good news. The final card is the Lion. Normally the Lion is shocking bad news, but next to the Letter, this is softened to a surprise. Therefore, I see that Will does have an interest in Latrice. However, I also see that there are professional issues to consider…I have the feeling Latrice will be promoted or given a position in a different department. The relationship will need to be reconsidered in light of the professional changes.
