Quick Peek: The Bleu Cat Tarot

The Bleu Cat Tarot by Beth Seilonon (published by Shiffer and available on Amazon) is a whimsical take on Tarot brought to you by a curious and wise Siamese. This has been one of my favorite decks for several years. A memorable reading with these cards was while I was working on my dissertation. You haven’t been told you’re lazy and need to get back to work until a Siamese tells you via a Celtic Cross spread.

Why I Love the Bleu Cat Tarot

What’s not to love? Yes, it’s a “cat deck.” I have several. This particular deck has a beautiful sense of humor. The illustrations are simple line drawings (in blue) and show the personality of a Siamese as he goes about wrecking plants, craving fish, chasing feathers, and playing with balls. I suspect the balls were filled with catnip. I enjoy the ease with which I connect to this deck. It speaks well to me but has a lot of sass.

Some Favorite Cards

The illustration on the Fool is cute and suitable for the message behind the card. Our hero (the Siamese) is perched on the roof ready to leap after a bird. The Death card shows the Siamese atop a cat carrier. It would appear the cat and his people are moving to a new house as a packing box sits in the background. Therefore, we see transition. Additionally, if you have ever shoved a feline friend into one of these, you understand the angst…for you and the cat unless you’re wearing a falconer’s glove. I also love the Page of Fishes (Cups). This rendition keeps some of the elements of Pamela Colman Smith’s illustration. The cap with a feather and the fish leaping out of the cup, now a bowl, are a nod to this classic Tarot image.
